Birds of the Algarve in January

Everyone loves a Flamingo!

I have just spent the month of January (2025) in the Algarve and whilst this was not a photographic trip, I took the camera and a couple of lenses.......just in case!

Needless to say, there were a few birds that were on my list and whilst many of them were not captured, here are some of my favourite images. They are not in any order, but I hope that you enjoy seeing them

I have subsequently moved on to the Costa Blanca area of Spain, where I am not expecting to photograph much at all, but will be enjoying some sun and relaxation, prior to coming home to France in April. 😎

Herons

This Heron was not going to need another meal for a while!

I spotted this Heron hunting and watched it take 2 voles within the space of just ten minutes.....they will eat just about anything!

Purple Swamphen

Large and striking bird that inhabits wetlands with abundant marshy vegetation. Their colouring is incredibly vibrant!

White Storks

The White Stork can be seen in many locations along the Algarve and in some towns, virtually every chimney or lampost is utilised as a nesting site!

Glossy Ibis

Seen from a distance, these birds can often be referred to as Black in colour.....Nothing could be further from the truth, especially when the light catches them, as can be seen in the following images

Flamingos

The Flamingo is always a spectacular bird to see in the wild and the salt pans near to Faro airport regularly have a small group of birds. Unfortunately, they did not give me the opportunity of any 'in flight' shots whilst I was there, but it was good to see them nonetheless.

Booted Eagle

About the size of a Buzzard, it is still easy to see that this bird is in fact, a small Eagle

Other Birds

Winchat

Black Winged Stilt

Stonechat

Zitting cisticola

  1. Magnificent set of photos well done Glynn, I like the little birds which to me would have been LBJs so good to see them close up. The Osprey is also very special. We should be in Johannesburg at the moment game reserves next week - sigh. We will not get any answers until N sees the surgeon 25 Feb.
Enjoy the break, love to Jenny, Diane
